Correspondence, 1838-1911.

Collection includes six detailed letters, some illustrated, to his mother, commenting on the economics of the art world, his relations with dealers, his views on art, and the sale and exhibition of work (1850-1887); two letters to Edouard Detaille mentioning Harpignies' activity as a watercolorist (1889-1891); nine letters to the cellist Delsart (1883-1911); and another letter to an unknown correspondent describing his lack of interest in experimenting with new paints (1896). Letters received include two from his mother reflecting on her son's vocation and seventeen letters from 1875 congratulating the artist on receiving the Legion of Honor. Correspondents include Joseph Vantillard, Maxime Lalanne, Alfred de Curzon, Jean Baptiste Antoine Guillemet, Alexandre Abel Felix Lauwich, Emile Lambinet, Evariste Vital Luminais, Philippe Rousseau and Leon Leguime. One letter from Elisee Lucat contains an original musical composition for cello dedicated to Harpignies and entitled "Un echo de l'Italie." With a copy of a 1934 Drouot catalogue indicating prices of works sold and a photograph of the artist (1912). In chronological order.
